Brett Jones: A Navy Seal who uses his writing to teach the nation

Decorated Navy SEAL Brett Jones had already completed two deployments overseas when, back in the states, his world came crashing down around him, all because of an answering machine. For years, Brett Jones lived a double life. He was a Navy SEAL, M-60 gunner. However, he hid for years that he was also gay and in a long term relationship. He held his secret so close, that his fellow SEAL special ops never suspected.

However, one day in 2002, Mr. Jones accidentally outed himself. He left an “I love you’’ phone message on his long term partner’s phone. A sailor heard the message and reported it up the Navy’s chain of command. The Navy quickly launched an investigation designed to dishonorably discharge him. Jones’ SEAL team found out, and even though at times the special operations world had negative views towards the gay community his team was actually supportive. Even though Mr. Jones had the support of his team he was honorably discharged in June of 2003.

More than a decade later, Mr. Jones, now with a husband and son, decided to break his silence to the world about his sexuality. Mr. Jones went on to write a variety of books about his experiences to help others who might be struggling with who they are.

Much like many of our Veteran’s Mr. Jones used his story to help people understand that diversity is one of the greatest gifts the world has to offer. I challenge you this week to celebrate our difference by getting to better know your team members and how they are different from you.
